Ten years of screening: 2001 to 2011

The NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme is celebrates its 10th anniversary at Portcullis house - June 2011.

Celebrities JB from JLS and Lenny Henry led the celebrations of the Programme's tenth anniversary. Hosted by Shadow Minister for Public Health Diane Abbott, the event was organised by the All  Parliamentay Party Group for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia, at Portcullis House, London.

Speakers included Trevor Phillips - Chair of Equality and Human Rights Commission, Anne Welsh, Chair of the Sickle Cell Society and Gabriel Theophanous, President of the UK Thalassaemia Society. The event was supported by Members of Parliament, the voluntary sector and clinical representatives from the various Royal Colleges.

Of course, this was a time where the Screening Programme was proud to showcase its achievements to date, many of which were illustrated in the exhibition displayed at Portcullis House. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the direction of the Screening Programme in the next ten years and the most important things to achieve within those ten years.

Friends of the Screening Programme were also generous enough to participate in "vox pop" recordings where they gave "of the cuff" interviews to camera, congratulating the Screening Programme on its anniversary and also about their own involvement with the Programme. Look out for interviews with Diane Abbott, JB from JLS, Lenny Henry and many more.

Listen to JB from JLS, Lenny Henry and others congratulate the Screening Programme on reaching 10 years

You can listen to messages from JB, Lenny Henry and patients such as Bryce Campbell (an aspiring junior golfer) who can be seen congratulating the Screening Programme on achieving its 10th anniversary.  Hear their views on why it is important to be tested as early in pregnancy as possibly, ideally by 10 weeks; why men should understand their role in the inheritance of sickle cell or thalassaemia; the importance of raising awareness of both these conditions.

More messages can be heard from Diane Abbott, Dr Terrance Stephenson, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Dr Shuja Shafi, from the Muslim Council amongst others.
