This protocol aims to clarify reporting arrangements for three types of newborn sickle cell screening results:  Condition not suspected results, carrier results and screen positive results for sickle cell.  The protocol has been developed with the Newborn Bloodspot Screening Programme (NBSP) and is informed by a recent HTA report¹; the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme response to the HTA report (http://sct.screening.nhs.uk/cms.php?folder=2420) and the Map of Medicine (MoM) pathways describing the linked antenatal and newborn screening pathway².

We have made some revisions to the 2010/2011 antenatal data return (copy attached) in order to make it more user-friendly and to improve the quality of the data we receive.

The changes made are largely superficial, and in response to feedback we have received the data fields have not changed since the last data return. The changes made are:

• The guidance is now included in the document, as is information on report formats. Comments have been added on each of the data fields to be filled in to offer some guidance, and each data item now has a link to the relevant guidance for each.
• The methodology questions have been changed in order to standardise answers and make them easier to fill in.
• Two new questions have been added regarding your Hb A2 reference range.
• We have tried to make the breakdown matrix clearer and have added some guidance to that page. Fields have also been added for cases where either the mother or the father is compound heterozygous.
