This Data Report focuses on the second year of data collection by the Screening Programme in conjunction with the UK Newborn Screening Programme Centre. Almost 670,000 newborn samples were screened for sickle cell disease with 360 babies identified with screen positive results for a clinically significant condition. The data presented in this report show that 359 babies were identified with screen positive results for a clinically significant condition in 2007/08, suggesting that overall, sickle cell disease is more common than cystic fibrosis in England. Affected infants have been detected in every Strategic Health Authority (SHA) in England.
